The Short Answer

What SEO Does

SEO matured over two decades around a stable model: a user types a query, an index returns ranked links, and visibility is a function of position. The discipline that grew around this model - keyword research, on-page optimisation, technical crawlability, link building, Core Web Vitals - is about persuading a ranking algorithm that your page is the most relevant and trustworthy result for a given query.

The overlap is the foundation. Both disciplines require a crawlable, fast, well-structured site with genuinely substantive content.
